Trash, Garbage, and Recycling - Sustainability Guidance 2023

SUNY System Administration

Trash, Garbage, and Recycling

Trash – Trash is defined as: Worthless or discarded materials or objects. All building occupants will have a small trash bin with a plastic bin liner for disposal. In the event you have an excessive amount of trash, please contact Erik Finkell of Facilities at x01877 and/or by e-mail: Erik.Finkell@suny.edu

Garbage – Garbage is aligned with food wastes from a break rooms and/or kitchens. This also includes disposed items from a bathroom, such as used paper towels or tissue paper.

We encourage building occupants to dispose of any garbage/food waste in your local break room/kitchen garbage bin. Garbage bins will have a control flap, as to mitigate any possible sanitation issues, vermin and/or food smells. Please refrain from disposing garbage in your trash bin.

Recycling – Each individual should be provided a small three gallon recycle container to use near their desk for recycling all paper and cardboard products.  When filled, individuals should empty their bins into the larger, rectangular recycle containers placed within a particular suite of office spaces.  Boxes and cartons should be flattened before placing in a bin.  Our evening cleaners will empty the suite bins as needed.

Sustainability Issues

Sustainability Issues – The night maintenance staff has been monitoring our Trash, Garbage, and Recycling over the past few months. We have found that many occupants are not separating Trash, Garbage, and Recycling.

  • Recycling: We need to improve our individual recycling efforts. We are finding items and materials that could be recycled i.e. paper, deposit bottles, cardboard and other recyclables being discarded in the trash. The following behavior complicates recycling efforts and this adds to SUNY’s carbon footprint. Please be responsible and place all paper & cardboard products in recycling containers.

  • Food Waste and Pest Control: We also find a lot of food waste in individual trash cans. We need individuals to take responsibility and ensure food waste is discarded in garbage containers with a control flap. These containers are located in your office suites or floor, kitchen areas and conference room for events. If you feel your suite needs additional containers, please contact Erik Finkell of Facilities at x01877 and/or by e-mail: Erik.Finkell@suny.edu
