Space Heater Usage Policy

Summary

System Administration rules for the approval and usage of personal space heaters.

Body

Background

Portable space heaters are expensive to operate, present an increased safety risk, and will only be provided when there is no viable alternative to provide adequate heating for a specific area.

Space heaters cause about 1,700 fires a year nationwide. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), they are the culprits in 81% of fatal house fires caused by heat. More than half of the fires caused by heating equipment between 2014 and 2018 occurred in the month of January. Heating is the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, and the third leading cause of home fire deaths. Local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 48,530 fires involving heating equipment per year in 2014-2018, accounting for 14% of all reported home fires during this time. These fires resulted in annual losses of 500 civilian deaths, 1,350 civilian injuries, and $1.1 billion in direct property damage.

Additionally, each space heater uses approximately 60 kilowatt hours per week at a cost of more than ten dollars. The energy consumption and cost is significant to operate numerous space heaters during the fall and winter months at SUNY Plaza and at a time when we are mandated to reduce energy consumption.

Policy

Adequate heat is generally maintained throughout Plaza Administration facilities. However, if a space cannot be adequately heated, or an individual has a special circumstance, we ask that they make a request for Plaza Operations to review the temperature conditions in their area or office. If heat cannot be adjusted appropriately, or the needs are special, we will issue a space heater that meets SUNY safety requirements.

No personally owned space heaters will be allowed in SUNY Administration buildings. If a portable electric space heater is required at a specific location, one will be provided.

Rules for approved & provided space heaters

  • Portable space heaters are temporary heating devices and should only be used for a limited time each day.

  • Do not leave the heater operating unattended.

  • Space heaters should be placed level and on the floor so it won't tip over. Make sure no nearby items can fall onto the heater and ignite.

  • Space heaters should be placed a minimum of three feet from combustible materials. It is important to check surrounding objects periodically to see if they feel hot.

  • Keep water and other containers of liquids away from space heaters

  • Space heaters will not be connected to an outlet with an extension cord.

  • When not in use, be sure to unplug the unit and let it cool down.
