Recycling Guidance 2023 - Facilities

Executive Order (EO) 4, (Known as the NYS Green Energy Report) signed April 24, 2008, directs all state agencies to maximize opportunities to reduce the amount of waste generated, to recycle material recoverable from the solid waste originating at their facilities, and to maximize the procurement of recycled products.

Please help us in reducing our quantity of solid waste that goes to the landfill.  If we increase our recycling efforts, then we will help the environment and lower our waste disposal expenses.

We have several types of collection bins to maximize our recycling efforts:

Cardboard and paper products (Confidata)

Confidential Document Disposal (Confidata)

Plastic, glass, and metal containers (County Waste Recycling)

Rechargeable batteries and Cell Phones (Go2Recycling)

Computer Diskettes, CD’s and DVDs (Go2Recycling & County Waste Recycling)

Printer ink cartridges (RICHO)

Eye Glasses (Lyons Club)

Cardboard and Paper Products: Each individual should be provided a small three gallon recycle container to use near their desk for recycling all paper and cardboard products.  When filled, individuals should empty their bins into the larger, rectangular recycle containers placed within a particular suite of office spaces.  Boxes and cartons should be flattened before placing in a bin.  Our evening cleaners will empty the suite bins as needed.

Types of allowed cardboard and paper products:

White Envelopes                     Computer, Fax & Copy Paper                        Notebook Paper

Magazines & Catalogs            White & Colored Ledger Paper                      Paper Egg Cartons

Cereal boxes                           Kraft Paper (brown grocery bags)                  Construction Paper

Soft Covered Workbooks       Telephone & Paperback Books                      Newspaper

Junk Mail (incl. envelopes & Coupons)

Confidential Document Disposal (Confidata) – As of December 2018, Confidata through Empire Recycling will provide SUNY System Administration with a "Confidential Document Disposal". The bins are delivered to our building locked to ensure internal controls and security. The Department of Facilities will provided "Confidential Document Bins" by request via our work order system.

Based on a scheduled pick-up time with Confidata, they will come to the H. Carl McCall SUNY Building to retrieve full containers in question. The containers are loaded into a Confidata truck and then brought to their secure facility for disposal.

Deposit Bottles, Plastic, Glass, and Metal Containers: Please use the large blue plastic containers placed in break rooms, kitchens, kiosk, elevator lobbies, and a few other strategic locations throughout the building. Any food product containers must be washed or rinsed out before recycling.  Our staff will empty these containers on set days of the week. We will than deliver the contents to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. This organization has volunteers who will sort through the contents for recyclable materials and they also redeem the deposit bottles. We estimate that we have delivered over 54,500 cans and bottles since July 2013, while ensuring the other items are fully recycled. Any of the following items that is not collected by the Mohawk Humane Society is recycled by County Waste Recycling, through our recycling dumpster on the property.

Types of clean (rinsed with no residue) allowed items:

Glass Bottles (green, clear, brown)                Aluminum Cans

Tin & Bi-Metallic Containers                           Milk cartons

Aluminum Foil                                                 Juice Boxes

Frozen Food Cartons                                      Plastic Containers

Printer Ink Cartridges: Individual Offices send these cartridges to User Services for recycling. There are also two custom recycling bins with slots for Printer ink cartridges. One can be found near the Elevators in the North Lobby of the Plaza and the other can be found in the Elevator Lobby on 3rd Floor North.

CDs/DVDs, Batteries, Cell Phones, Hearing Aids, and Eye Glasses. There are two custom recycling bins for the following items. They have labeled slots for the items.
