SUNYNet - Managed DNS (Legacy)

Service Overview

  • Historically, we have utilized on-premises servers for this service but as industry best practices have encouraged migrating to the cloud, we now offer this service via DNS Made Easy.
  • Customers are provided the option of utilizing Managed (Primary) or Replication (Secondary) servers to replace or complement their existing nameservers.
  • DNS Made Easy provides SUNYNet with eight nameservers distributed across fifteen global datacenters. The DNS service is managed by SUNYNet NOC staff from the System Administration offices in Albany.
  • SUNYNet provides record and zone administration on behalf of the customer. NOC staff is available during business hours, during scheduled maintenance and by appointment after-hours to commit DNS record or zone changes.
  • (Optional) Campuses may request co-management of their own zones and add/remove/modify records at their leisure.
  • (Optional) Customers may utilize up to five primary servers and three secondary servers.

Benefits:

  • Servers are hosted off-site and globally to ensure availability of name resolution without the need for dedicated rack space or virtual resources.
  • Customers may utilize up to five (5) primary or three (3) secondary nameservers.
  • SUNYNet NOC personnel serve as an extension to the IT department's staff to offload the tasks for managing a dedicated DNS solution.
  • DNS Failover can be leveraged to automatically or manually switch records to another IP address during a planned or unplanned interruption of service.
