How to manage spam email

Overview

Microsoft Exchange Online Protection's spam filter screens and quarantines suspicious email before it reaches your inbox. Spam is sent to the Outlook Junk folder. Bulk messages (like marketing email and newsletters) are delivered to your inbox.

Manage spam through the junk folder

The Junk folder is a feature of Outlook, Outlook Mobile and the Online Web App (OWA). Known and suspected spam messages are sent to your Outlook Junk folder. We recommend that you:

  • Check your Junk folder. Occasionally, non-spam email is sent to Junk.
  • Manage non-spam. Open your Junk folder. Right-click a non-spam message and mark as Not Junk. Click OK to trust this email address. Email from this sender will no longer be sent to Junk. Non-spam can also be dragged back to your inbox.
  • Other Junk folder options include:
    • Block sender
    • Never block sender
    • Mark as Not junk
  • Open the Junk email options... dialog box and check your blocked and safe senders lists.  Right-click an email message and go to Junk, Junk E-mail Options.

Manage bulk email

Bulk email, like newsletters or product emails, are still sent to your inbox. If you choose, right-click the message to delete or archive or choose a Junk folder option like Block Sender or Never Block Sender. See the Junk email options... to manage your list of blocked and safe senders.  Note: You can have up to 1,024 addresses or domains in the blocked senders and safe senders lists.

What about a phishing email?

If you receive a suspected phishing email, react and report. See the phishing article to learn more.
